Assumption grads to take their place in world
By Tanya Connor
The valedictorian urged classmates to follow Christ.
The president said he hopes they “feel compelled to change whatever enfeebles the Gospel.”
The ambassador spoke of reducing anti-Americanism by caring about the problems of the rest of the world.
These were among challenges presented to Assumption College’s 682 graduates at the 91st commencement Saturday.
“You will take your place today as Assumption graduates in a dramatically different world – dominated by globalization,” Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns said in his prepared speech.
Former United States under secretary of state for political affairs, Ambassador Burns oversaw U.S. policy in each region of the world and once was ambassador to NATO and U.S. Ambassador to Greece.
He received an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree and hailed his cousins, Sister of Mercy Cathleen Toomey, former director of the college’s campus ministry, and Joe, his wife, Gayle, and their son, Paul Toomey, a graduate.
The bright side of globalization includes computers, medical advances, and energy research, and the dark side, environmental threats, human trafficking, drugs and terrorism, Ambassador Burns said.
“These global forces…cannot be managed by one nation alone,” he said.
“We should not want to be the lone global cop in a world where our soldiers do all the fighting and our taxpayers foot the bill. Instead, we need to commit to a more vigorous global leadership that will convince the rest of the world to join with us…to make our planet…democratic, secure, peaceful.
“If we communicate to the rest of the world that their problems are on our agenda and that we are listening to them, we can begin to reduce the anti-Americanism so rampant in the world today.
“We need you…to embrace public service and to provide the kind of international leadership the world needs.”
Assumption President Francesco C. Cesareo said in his prepared speech that his deepest hope is that graduates have not only learned to live successfully, but also that they “feel compelled to change whatever enfeebles the Gospel.”
“This will require you to acknowledge the existence of objective truth,” he said. “The world is in desperate need of individuals like you who are willing to embrace the truth, even when doing so may require you to stand in opposition to the secular trends and ideas that dominate our world today. Do not be afraid to be people of conviction and belief.”
Sporting a Red Sox shirt, Valedictorian Jeffrey Roy noted how his class saw two Red Sox World Series Championships.
“Learn from the past,” advised the accounting and economics major headed for a campus ministry trip to Mexico. “Live in the present. Let go of the future. Most importantly, keep God in your heart.
“Often taking risks and making mistakes will leave you in a state of darkness. … Trust that God will provide you the light…
“The present is the only time you can have an impact and make choices. The past…consists of pages already written that cannot be erased. The future …consists of blank pages with no words… The million-dollar question is ‘what do you want the next word to be?’…
“God has already provided us with a solution: ‘He who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.’ …
God calls each of us to live our lives as Disciples of Christ. In doing this, we must become servants to those in need and put others before ourselves, as well as take lesson from those who have lived gracefully.”
Anna Maria College holds commencement at new Hanover Theater
By Matt Doyle
CFP Correspondent
The 59th commencement at Anna Maria College was held May 17 at the Hanover Theater for the Performing Arts in downtown Worcester. The 287 graduates heard a consistent call to carry the values they had developed at the school into the marketplace.
Jack P. Calareso, president of the college, stressed that the values instilled in the students were directly related to those fostered for generations by the Sisters of St. Anne who founded the school in 1946.
“You are members of the Sisters of St. Anne family,” said Calareso, “and you will contribute to the common good.”
The sense of “values, tradition, history and community” make Anna Maria unique, according to Calareso. Those virtues, he said, were firmly rooted in the Sisters of St. Anne.
The ideas first expressed by Calareso were reinforced by commencement speaker Lynda M. Connolly, Chief Justice of the District Court. Connolly began her remarks by outlining her job, but reminded the graduates that those parameters only defined what she did and not who she was.
“The defining experiences of my life occur in relationship to other people,” said Connolly. She added that she was many things including a wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law.
Connolly offered the graduates two questions that would be used to define their lives and their relationships for the years ahead. The two questions are: “Who do I belong to?” and “Who belongs to me?”
With those questions as guides, Connolly suggested the graduates would be able to define their relationships to the broader community. She drew heavily on her experience in the judicial system to emphasize how one is to view others in relationship to oneself.
Connolly noted that all those who came before the court system seeking justice belonged to her and she to them. Their expectation of justice was of paramount importance.
In the course of her brief talk, Connolly defined the idea of belonging. “Belonging requires that you keep your head where your feet are,” she said.
As proof of this logic she noted that long after graduation day was over, the words of the speakers would not be remembered. However, she guaranteed that the graduates would remember the people with whom they shared the joyful moments of the day.
“Embrace the pleasure of one another’s company,” said Connolly.
However, the idea of defining belonging was not just for the pleasure according to the chief justice. “Belonging is a call to action,” she said.
Connolly suggested that grasping the concept of belonging to one another would lead to active citizenship and “the offering of time and talent in service to one another.”
She urged the graduates to remember that they would not save the world all at once, but cited advice from people such as Mother Teresa. She said saving the world begins by helping one person at a time.
Finally, Connolly reiterated the need to understand that belonging means being part of something larger than oneself. “Belonging means embracing the wide community of need.”
Connolly, who did her undergraduate work at the College of William and Mary and graduated from Boston College Law School, said she was now a part of the Anna Maria community. “We belong together.”
In addition to delivering the commencement address, Connolly was the recipient of an honorary degree. She was joined in that by Annette Rafferty, founder of Abby’s House in Worcester.
William J. Hazelwood of Warwick, R.I. was given The Bishop Timothy J. Harrington Award, an award established in 1988 for the student who has demonstrated compassionate service in the promotion of peace and justice. Hazelwood was presented the award by Bishop George E. Rueger, retired auxiliary bishop of Worcester, and Calareso.

Holy Cross graduates told to ‘find flowers among the weeds’
By Matthew Doyle
CFP Correspondent
WORCESTER — The College of the Holy Cross awarded 669 Bachelor of Arts Degrees on Fitton Field May 23. The formal classroom education on Mount St. James was over, but one more lesson remained and it was delivered by the principal speaker for the day, Dr. Kevin M. Cahill.
Dr. Cahill is a noted humanitarian, president of the Center for International Health and Cooperation, and professor at Fordham University. He wears many other titles as well. On one special sunny morning, he put all those experiences together in a series of stories meant to challenge the graduates to use what they had learned in ways they may not yet have imagined.
Dr. Cahill began his advice to the graduates by saying that he would offer them a few personal stories that might help to tie up the “loose threads that remain to be woven into the education you have now partially completed and, in another way, just begun.”
Dr. Cahill recounted his arrival in Calcutta, India as a medical doctor some 50 years ago. While he acknowledged the stereotypical negatives of the city, he said he mainly recalled the aromatic spices and exotic music he heard in the midst of his newfound love.
During his time in Calcutta he pursued his interests in tropical medicine and worked with a then unknown Albanian nun whom the world would come to know as Mother Teresa. “I was immersed in a wonder-filled, strange culture, and faced utterly new challenges and, just as importantly, new opportunities,” said Dr. Cahill.
He recounted the journeys that have taken him to some 65 countries around the world where he has spent most of the time in refugee camps and war zones. Despite his inability to relieve the suffering he witnessed, Dr. Cahill said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve.
“I always realized how privileged I was to serve, to share, and even begin to identify with those caught in the cross fires of conflicts not of their making,” said Dr. Cahilll. “A spiritual solidarity develops in just being with them. They were my brothers and sisters.”
Dr. Cahill acknowledged that his training in an American medical school could not prepare him for the ways he needed to improvise in the field. “Solutions were discovered more frequently in the intellectual foundations I received at Fordham in Aristotelian logic and Thomistic reasoning, than in the technical formulae of the medical sciences we had been taught,” said Dr. Cahill.
Lving in solidarity with the downtrodden taught him just how unimportant so many of his personal cares and concerns really were. “In the most sordid situations I have always felt inordinately humbled to see, often with amazement, always with admiration, the courage and resiliency of the downtrodden, those who seem to have been totally overwhelmed, but then, like the Phoenix, rise again from the ashes,” he said.
Dr. Cahill acknowledged that despite his career in helping and healing people in the developing world, they offered him something in return. He said he has been changed and now serves those in developing lands by telling their stories to others – such as the Class of 2008 at the College of the Holy Cross.
“Now you, our graduates, inherit these dreams; you must provide aid to those who suffer, and do so without robbing the oppressed of their last shreds of dignity,” said Dr. Cahill. “Holy Cross has given you the fundamentals.”
Dr. Cahill said that all must be involved. He did not call for the graduates to run off to exotic places, but offered ways in which they can be of service where they are.
He suggested it can begin with the teaching of their children one day or in volunteering in a soup kitchen. “You can learn, right here in Worcester, from drug addicts, from the homeless, and the helpless, both rich and poor, and your experiences would, I will wager, be as important as my tales of the tropics,” he said.
Dr. Cahill said it was time for the graduates to begin their journey wherever that may lead. It was in his opening remarks that Dr. Cahill offered the graduates comforting words to take on the journey. “[I]n those difficult periods of your lives – those times of strife and challenge that each of you will unexpectedly but surely face – there will be flowers hidden amidst the weeds.”
Dr. Cahill received an honorary degree. Honorary degrees were also conferred on David Anderson, sports columnist for The New York Times and winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary; Father Robert Athickal, S.J., founder of India’s Tarumitra (Hindi for “Friends of the Trees”), a student environmental movement; Donald P. Moriarty, former member of the Holy Cross Board of Trustees; and James A. Welu, director of the Worcester Art Museum.
