WORCESTER – St. Peter-Marian Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School received the trophy at the Adopt-A-Student program’s first talent show Friday at Holy Name Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School.
St. Peter-Marian junior Youngsoo “Simon” Ra won first place, so his name was inscribed on the trophy, which his school will keep until next year, according to Adopt-A-Student chairman Robert R. Pape.
The program raises money to support students in the diocese’s central Catholic schools, including St. Peter Central Catholic Elementary School and St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School in Fitchburg. The four schools held contests, which involved more than 80 students. The 16 finalists – in two bands and nine individual acts – competed Friday for about 250 audience members.
Mr. Pape said steering committee member William  Driscoll, who works at St. Peter-Marian, suggested the fundraiser, which raised about $3,500 and promoted Catholic schools.
“He thought we could capitalize on ‘America’s Got Talent’” and other shows, he said. “He said the kids are all into that. Everybody was excited and we plan to do it again.”
