Catholic Schools Week is a nationwide celebration of Catholic schools. In the Diocese of Worcester, our Catholic schools will observe Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members during the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
The College of the Holy Cross has received a $3 million gift to support the college’s Center for Liberal Arts in the World from the family of J.D. Power III, Class of 1953.
The congregation was made up mostly of young adults, whom Bishop McManus called to be apostles. The bishop was preaching to about 40 people at the diocese’s first “Mass mob” Feb. 20 at St. Paul Cathedral in Worcester.
Food pantries in the diocese and in Worcester County are doing the work of Christ, caring for the homeless, caring for the poor and taking care of those who are much less fortunate than ourselves, Bishop McManus said Jan. 22 at a meeting of food providers.
WORCESTER – Pro-life movement leaders expressed hope for building on a new momentum as they spoke at an interfaith conference Sunday. Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, was a key speaker at the Massachusetts Citizens for Life 45th Assembly for Life, held at Mechanics Hall.
The Worcester Diocese finished the 2017 fiscal year with a deficit of $278,802, or slightly more than 1 percent of its total expenses of $26,169,629, according to the diocesan annual report on financial activities.
WORCESTER – Visiting Haitians shared some of their struggles – and faith and love – with people in the Worcester Diocese, before leaving for home Wednesday. The visitors – students and others involved with the diocesan Haitian Apostolate – prayed for benefactors, received Bishop McManus’ blessing, lunched with Chancery staff and school children and visited the zoo in Providence.

Community – leading to Christ. That’s a key reason to be “religious,” not just “spiritual,” according to Father Donato Infante, associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Charlton. He was speaking Jan. 9 at The Compass Tavern in Worcester for Theology on Tap, a monthly gathering for people ages 18-39, organized by the diocese’s youth and young adult ministry.
Jane Gutowski wasn’t making a big deal of her birthday Jan. 9. Family members, special guests and her fellow residents and staff members at St. Mary Health Care Center in Worcester made more of it. The three candles on her cake explained why: they formed the number 103.
A celebration with seven Haitian students who are sponsored through the Worcester Diocesan Haitian Apostolate is to be held Sunday at 12:30 p.m., at St. Joseph Church, 35 Hamilton St., Worcester. A reception follows.
LEOMINSTER - Bishop McManus will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Cecilia Church for Father Richard G. Roger, 80, former pastor of Notre Dame-St. Joseph Parish Worcester, who died Jan. 6 at home.
An unwanted Christmas surprise that has closed the Crocker Elementary School in Fitchburg has given the St. Anthony School building a new lease on life. On Monday, third- and fourth-graders and their teachers from the public school entered their new temporary home at St. Anthony’s on Salem Street. St. Anthony’s, a parish school, closed at the end of the 2016-17 school year.
